Kemetic yoga:
Self-cultivation through breath and movement
THE INSPIRATION
“As a vocalist, I’m always looking for ways to fine-tune my singing skills and keep my spirit in order. After reading an article about saxophonist Sonny Rollins entitled “How 50 Years of Practicing Yoga Made Him a Better Musician”, I decided to deepen my commitment to my Yoga practice by becoming certified as a Kemetic Yoga teacher.

What is kemetic yoga?
Kemetic Yoga is an African, wholistic, disease preventative practice that integrates breathwork, postures, and meditation to nurture your potential. The goal of this yoga practice is to help you to manifest yourself fully through harmonizing the breath, the mind, and movement.
For musicians, instrumentalists, dancers, performers, actors, and other individuals within the entertainment industry, a healthy Kemetic Yoga practice can assist in:
Circulating healing energy to the organs and muscles
Releasing physical and emotional pain and tension
Relaxation of singing muscles
Having better playing posture
Improving breath control
Relaxing the nerves
Improving concentration
Harmonizing with the cosmic flow of energy
Builds confidence and belief in oneself
THE FORM + PRACTICE
“People who are not very athletic, flexible or are overweight or elderly will find this system easier.” - Yasir Ra Hotep
Kemetic yoga is akin to Tai-Chi in it’s form and function. The focus is on feeling the energy flow through the body, in harmony with the breath. It is not unnecessarily strenuous, and unlike other forms of Yoga does not require expert level skills to immediately feel the beneficial, health-bringing effects.
Maintaining proper alignment of the spine and exoskeleton while moving through Kemetic Yoga postures generates strength in the muscles. Harmonizing the breath while moving through these challenging postures cultivates deep relaxation, relieves tension, and offers flexibility of mind and body.
